Portait of artist James Russell Thacker

Painting

My painting explores picturesque and decorative themes drawn from classical sources and the baroque, focusing on nature as a metaphor for artistic transformation.

The pictorial and abstract aspects of painting seem to coalesce in the scenic splendor of my antique models, shaped by a material sensibility that inspires my own approach to the craft.

Reflecting the idyllic spirit and elemental qualities of pastoral design, I compose with an expansive, lyrical sense of form using natural media and traditional techniques of layered color.

Through landscape, still life, ornament, and allegory, I conjure a unique aesthetic world that encompasses both the poetry of Arcadian imagery and the sensuous materiality of its abstract expressions.
